R22 is an old refrigerant gas that is in the bracket of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons, Generally used in air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration systems. Since the 1st January 2015 Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (R22) have become illegal for servicing and maintenance, meaning that many of the older systems using the R22 refrigerant will need to be replaced when a breakdown occurs in order to comply with this EU legislation.
To clarify how this will affect you here in Spain:
- You are still able to use your R22 air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment. The legislation changes on R22 will only effect the operation if there is a breakdown or gas leakage.
- If there is a parts failure that is not part of the refrigeration circuit, this can be repaired subject to availability of parts. Manufacturers have now stopped stocking R22 spares and therefore the equipment may become obsolete if faulty.
- If there is a failure on the refrigerant circuit, the R22 has to be removed to allow any repairs to be carried out. Once the R22 refrigerant is removed from the system it is classed as a hazardous waste and it is illegal to reuse or put back into the system.
- Based on the above we would advise that the lead time for repairing R22 equipment would increase dramatically and therefore any critical cooling systems should be identified and Your unit may possibly need to be replaced with a new energy efficient HFC based inverter system in order to adhere to the ruling, in which case you will require expert assistance, which We supply only the most efficient and productive air conditioning units to our customers, so the initial cost of a new unit will be offset by the energy savings you make.
